The black caiman is an American alligator that, along with the alligator, is one of the two largest extant species in the family Alligatoridae. It is a carnivorous reptile that lives in slow-flowing rivers, ponds, and seasonally flooded savannahs in the Amazon Basin. They reach a minimum length of 5 m (16 ft) (sometimes up to 6 m (20 ft)) as adults and are the second largest reptile in the Neotropics, after the critically endangered Orinoco. As the name suggests, adults are pretty dark. Juveniles are lighter in color, with pale yellowish-white patches on the side of the body that are still visible as adults. Its large and heavy head gives it an advantage when hunting large prey.
Believe it or not, the black caiman is often considered the deadliest predator in South America, causing more attacks on humans than bull sharks, anacondas or even the American jaguar. Black caimans are very large and there are at least six species that live throughout Brazil.
