Rachel stared at her husband in disbelief. “You don’t want to be married to me anymore? Then maybe you should just leave. It’s not that hard,” Marcus said coldly, turning his face away.
She opened her mouth, but he cut her off.
“Look at yourself—who’s going to want a woman with three kids?” he added, pointing at her with pure disgust.
Rachel stood there frozen, the weight of his words hitting her like a slap. Tears welled up in her eyes, but she said nothing. She simply turned and walked out of the room.

**HOURS LATER…**
“Marcus! Marcus, help me! Lily isn’t breathing right!” Rachel screamed, bursting into the living room in panic, clutching their youngest daughter tightly.
“What happened?” Marcus asked casually, not even bothering to get up from the couch.
“Please, we need to get her to the hospital right now,” Rachel begged, her voice breaking as she held Lily against her chest.
Marcus sighed loudly, stood up slowly, and muttered, “Fine. Let me get dressed.”
A few minutes later they were in the car. Just as Marcus turned the key, his phone rang. It was his mother.
“Vanessa’s in labor! We’re heading to Mercy General right now. Meet us there!” his mother said urgently.
“I’m on my way,” Marcus replied, hanging up.
“Let’s go, please,” Rachel pleaded from the passenger seat, still cradling Lily, who was struggling to breathe.
Marcus looked at her. “I’m sorry… Vanessa’s having the baby. I have to be there.”
Rachel’s heart shattered. Still, she tried to stay strong for her daughter. “Please… can you at least drop us off at the urgent care clinic first?”
But Marcus’s expression hardened. “No. Get out. I need to get over there now.”
“Please, Marcus… it’s the middle of the night. How am I supposed to do this alone with the kids?”
“I said get out! I’m trying to be nice by not forcing you!”
Tears streaming down her face, Rachel stepped out of the car with Lily in her arms and called for their two older children to follow. She stood on the dark suburban street, watching the man she once loved speed off without even a glance back.
She rushed back inside, grabbed her own car keys, and tried to start it. Nothing. The engine stayed dead silent. She tried again and again for over twenty minutes, her panic rising with every failed attempt.
“Oh God, what is happening tonight?” she whispered, looking down at her sick child.
With no other choice, Rachel wrapped Lily tighter in a blanket and began walking with the kids toward the main road. They waited over an hour for a ride. Most cars passed by. Finally, one pulled over—but the driver demanded an outrageous price. Rachel didn’t argue. She just needed to get to the hospital.
“Vicas Urgent Care,” she said quickly, climbing into the back seat with her children.
At the clinic, Lily was diagnosed with meningitis. She was admitted immediately. Rachel stayed by her bedside, praying and crying as the IV dripped slowly.
—
Meanwhile at Mercy General Hospital, Marcus rushed in. His mother and sister were waiting.
“Mom, where’s Vanessa?” he asked anxiously.
“She’s in the delivery room. They said her pelvis is too small—they’re doing a C-section,” his mother explained.
“Alright, I’ll take care of the bill,” Marcus said, heading to the financial office.
A short while later, Vanessa was taken into surgery.
At 2:15 a.m., the doctor came out smiling.
“Congratulations, Mr. Marcus. Your wife just delivered a healthy baby boy.”
Marcus dropped to the floor, screaming with joy like he had won the lottery. His mother danced around the waiting room.
“After ten long years! God finally answered our prayers!” she shouted.
“Can I see her?” Marcus asked eagerly.
He stepped into the room beaming and began showering Vanessa with cash and gifts.
“Thank you for making me a real father,” he said joyfully.
“You’re welcome, baby,” she whispered weakly.

Back at Vicas Clinic, Rachel sat exhausted beside Lily’s bed. The little girl had stabilized for a moment, and Rachel finally allowed herself a small breath of relief. She picked up her phone and absentmindedly scrolled through social media.
That’s when she saw Marcus’s status:
“Welcome to the world, my son. After ten years, God has finally made me a father!”
He sounded happier than he had in years.
A weak voice pulled her back.
“Mommy… my head hurts so bad…”
“Nurse! Doctor!” Rachel screamed.
The medical team rushed in and immediately asked her to step outside. Moments later, they wheeled Lily into the ICU. Rachel ran after them, screaming her daughter’s name, but was stopped at the door. She sank to her knees in the hallway, praying desperately.
Thirty minutes passed.
The doctor finally stepped out, his face grave.
“Where is your husband, ma’am?” he asked quietly.
“He’s not here,” Rachel replied, her voice shaking. “Just tell me.”
The doctor looked down. “I’m so sorry. We lost her. If she had gotten here earlier, we might have been able to save her.”
Rachel’s world stopped.
“You lost… what?” she whispered, trembling.
“We need to handle some paperwork before moving the body. If you can’t do it alone, please call a relative.”
The doctor walked away.
Rachel collapsed onto the cold floor, her screams echoing through the hallway.
“Oh my sweet Lily… my beautiful girl. Why did you leave me so soon?”
She cried, rolled on the floor, and clutched her chest in unbearable pain.
Through her tears, she called Marcus’s friend Kevin and told him everything. Even at that late hour, Kevin arrived within twenty minutes.
“Please… take me to Marcus,” Rachel begged. “You know where he is.”
Kevin was furious when he heard how Marcus had abandoned them. Without another word, he drove her straight to Mercy General.

As soon as they arrived, Rachel stormed into the hospital like a woman possessed. She found Marcus sitting in the waiting area with his family, still beaming with joy, laughing and celebrating.
She marched straight up to him, grabbed his shirt with both hands, and yanked him to his feet. With every ounce of pain and fury in her heart, she screamed:
“I hope you’re happy now! One of the children you despised so much is lying cold in the morgue!”
Marcus’s face went ghostly white. “I… I thought it was just a headache. I didn’t know it was that serious. That’s why I left… I had something important to handle.”
Rachel let out a bitter, broken laugh that sent chills through everyone in the room.
“You turned your back on your own daughter when she needed you most. You chose this while our little girl was fighting for her life. You’ve done the unthinkable, Marcus. And I promise you… I will take back every single thing I ever sacrificed for you.”
The entire waiting area fell silent. The joy that had filled the room only moments earlier had completely vanished.
